When we first set out to make math videos more than 15 years ago, teaching about fractions seemed like a good place to start. After all, fractions are such an important and practical topic. At that time we decided to make eight fractions videos that we hoped to release on a DVD or maybe even a CD-ROM (remember those?). …my how things have changed!
Until now, those eight videos have comprised the Fractions section on our website. But as we’ve gotten better at making videos, we realized that having a topic as important as fractions be represented by our oldest (and by comparison) worst videos was less than ideal.
In response, we are deviating from our normal course of only covering new topics to revise and update our fractions section. We don’t plan to remake every video we have about fractions; just the ones that we think need it the most.
We’ve started by making two new Fractions video called “What are Fractions?” and “Fractions on the Number Line”. They feature better audio and video quality, more thorough explanations and improved graphics and “antics”.
These two new videos replace the first four old fractions videos. You can still access those old videos on our website by clicking the link at the bottom of the fractions section, but we hope you will prefer the new versions. We think they do a much better job explaining fractions with one exception; our old video called “Working With Parts”. In that video we show how fractions can be compared and added visually. In hindsight, we feel that this approach is a little below the age range of our established audience. But if you have students younger than 3rd grade this video may still be helpful.
In the coming months, we will be working on replacements for the remaining four videos. This process will take a while because we want to ensure that they are a clear improvement over what we currently have to offer, and because it’s just the two of us working on new material.
It’s our current hope to have the next two videos ready in time for the Fall.
We sincerely thank you for all the ways you support our efforts!
